You know that absence you feel when you've been involved in a book and its over? Now I'm looking for other bios to match it.......not easy. The writer is very thorough and its interesting to see all sides of Streisand. To me her appeal comes from her combination of vulnerability and strength. You know she always fought for herself artistically......and how can you not admire that? She grew up in a male dominated world, but managed to forge through. The writer is no Marcel Proust, but the subject is so interesting that you don't care. Spada is a very good reporter. The first half of the book is great......second half merely good, but it adds up to a real treat for most readers. Enjoy.

Streisand Her Life James Spada 9780517597538 Books Reviews

Interesting read for Barbra fans. I have always respected her work, now I feel like I understand her perfectionism. I have much more empathy for Ms. Streisand after reading this biography. Only drawback is the author often goes into much to much detail of Ms. Streisand's song album choices from long a go album releases...snooze. I would have liked to know more about her present day life. Regardless, this book s definitely worth a read!
It's hard not to know who Barbra Streisand is. Singer, activist, director, producer, star of stage, screen, television, concerts . . . the list is endless as one looks back upon her 50 years in show business and tallies up her career milestones.

In STREISAND HER LIFE, 2012, James Spada attempts to do the impossible - retell the urban legend without being repetitive or vague. Ms. Streisand is notorious about protecting her privacy so what you read in this updated version of his previously published tome is fascinating. Facts are presented in a neat, orderly basis. The reader follows the meteoric rise of Barbra Streisand from her near humble beginnings in Brooklyn to her present concert tours.

Many books have been written about Barbra Streisand. Indeed, Mr. Spada himself tackled the subject earlier (this is just an update detailing her latest acheivements). When somebody is as universally known as Barbra Streisand is, it creates a vast wasteland of gossipy tidbits, rumors and speculation. Wisely, Mr. Spada faces these rumors and lays them down as an occurance, not a certifiable fact. Instead, he concentrates on her work ethics, drive, determination and the hits and misses that encompass fifty years in show business.

It is a monumental undertaking but, page after page, the author never seems to tire of his subject. He presents the legend as an entertainer and, more importantly, a person. You might not understand the woman, or even like certain areas of her personality, but after reading STRESIAND HER LIFE, 2012, you are aware of the genius that is present in almost everything Ms. Streisand does.
While I have been a fan of Barbra Streisand my entire life, I have not read any biographies about her. First, this book seems to be extremely well researched and objective. I do feel I understand Barbra's life to a much greater extent and appreciation. Parts are so detailed that I had to do a little skipping, but definitely worth the read.
We say that when you love a book you love reading it so much that you can't put it down. With this one, I never wanted it to end, so I was reading it in bits. I love the start of her life and most of all the details of the songs that she has sang. Songs I never imagined she sang and during my reading process I'd stop and would go to youtube to listen to her music, and the concerts that she's performed. Kudos to James Spada, anything he writes is a winner!
I can relate so very much with Barbra not only because we have the same birthdays, but because of her fears as well which I never knew. Her stubbornness and her being perfectionist is all for a good cause. People that knew her understood and accepted her personality and never took it against her..those are the many few who for me where professionals themselves to be able to communicate with her ...anyway, I very good interesting to know bio of her. I like her more than anything after reading this book"
Being a Streisand fan and recognizing James Spada's talent for truthful, contextual interpretations of his deep and thorough research, I thought his "Streisand" would be full of intimate revelations of the superstar. And, indeed, every section of every chapter is complete with argument and counterargument - Spada is quite adept at revealing Streisand's point-of-view concerning her vociferous detractors' allegations which center primarily on their admonishments of her need for complete control over all of her projects (even those early ones where she had no official (contractual) rights of creative input). Overall, however, the book is more an expressive timeline of her life complete with a conflation of others' grumblings and her publicly stated reactions to them - a Streisand encyclopedia. For me, it's *too* objective, the writing too sterile. I'm not sorry I bought the book, and, in the early chapters I actually liked Spada's academic objectivity. But I became too detached from Barbra, herself. That is, I never got to "know" Barbra, but I did learn a great deal about her.
I only gave it 4 stars because some of the story telling was a bit rambling or dragged out but the story itself is very interesting. I think it shows that Barbra is a very driven, complicated and fascinating person. Some say she's difficult and some say just the opposite but it isn't as simple as that. When she is passionate about a project, either music or theatrical, she may seem overpowering or some would say difficult, but I think if you read 'between the lines' you can see that it is actually about the end result and in her world that is really what is important. After all, who wants to see a movie that hasn't been well acted, produced or directed or buy an album that doesn't make you want to hear it over and over again? I personally see the effort in her movies and her music and I appreciate her perfectionism.
You know that absence you feel when you've been involved in a book and its over? Now I'm looking for other bios to match it.......not easy. The writer is very thorough and its interesting to see all sides of Streisand. To me her appeal comes from her combination of vulnerability and strength.
