This book is, indeed, a light book, and somewhat entertaining. I was captivated enough to read it through to the end, but when I closed the book, I felt it lacked.

It was obvious the author loves Ethiopia, a country I would love to visit sometime. However, I had no sense of Addis Ababa. I would have loved to have seen more of the contrasts between wet/gray sea-level London and dry/sunny mountain-high Addis Ababa. Not just the climate, but the smells, the noise, the streets, the domiciles. Yohannes didn't travel just across the street; he traveled to a different world and even, to a degree, a different time.

I was confused by the Prologue. As I understand it, a Prologue is used to set the story in time and place, perhaps a bit of backstory. In this case, it is not a prologue but an excerpt from a middle chapter. It was confusing. And unnecessary.

I would have liked to have seen him wrestle a bit with the promise his mother made to the Sister at the orphanage that he would grow up to be a doctor, return, and help the people. How did he feel about having his life planned out by his parents? Did he feel guilty when he chose a different path?

Yohannes Ishi seems to just go with the flow through much of his life, seldom taking a stand, or maybe not needing to, but I felt he lacked the backbone to follow through on his final decision. If someone came along and made him a different and perceived better offer, he'd go.

I do recommend this book, even though I am giving it only 3 stars. It is interesting; it gives a bit of an insight into another culture with which I am not familiar. I would LOVE to see the Author do some rewriting to bring in some tension, comparisons, sights, smells, etc. as mentioned above. I would gladly read it again, if the writer did some rework, and I'm confident I would give it a higher rating. Perhaps the author should consider making this a faux memoir? Perhaps written in first person it would then have more immediacy.

Yohannes Ishi made me fall in love with Ethiopia. it was such a gorgeous, memorable book that it will stay with me for the rest of my life.
I love this book - it's a really entertaining light read full of individuals' stories and memorable characters. It has loads to say which is relevant to anyone who has an interest in in travelling, in living in other countries, and in working out where they belong, while, at the same time, being extremely readable. The pictures it paints of Ethiopia as a country are vivid and the people that you come across as the story progresses are believable, likeable and interesting. I found myself really wanting to know what happened to all the characters - their stories are fascinating and often, also, funny. Mr Bamato has a lovely turn of phrase and I hope that we will be seeing more from him in the future.
I enjoyed this as a short and light novel with an unusual setting and storyline. A young man adopted by British aid workers as an orphaned baby returns to Addis Ababa where he was born, knowing almost nothing about its people or culture, and attempts to understand and become part of it. After struggling at first, he finds friendship and romance in surprising places and discovers a new path for himself.

The main character's sense of not properly belonging to one culture or the other - being always somewhere between the colourful locals and the western expatriates - will probably strike a chord with people of mixed nationality/race/background and people who have spent a lot of time living abroad. I at least could certainly relate to it, and I was also interested to learn something about the modern history of Ethiopia.

The book is a smooth and easy read. Its tone is warm and gently uplifting, and overall I would consider it good value for the price and for the time it demands.
Nabse Bamato!!! Eagerly awaiting your next release. This novel illustrates life from an amazing point of view. Along with great story telling made me question how this can be his first book. Already got two copies and will probably get more because every one I know must read this!!!!
A fascinating glimpse into the complex historical, cultural, and political landscape that shaped the urban lifestyle in Ethiopia and the identity of its inhabitants. His work especially shines when he skilfully brings humour, traditions and religion to drive the story home. This book take you to a completely different world than the one you are in on a daily basis. It captures you and won't let you go! I fully recommend this excellent work!!!
The end was rather disappointing not very realistic. The beginning was very interesting and a great insight to the culture of Ethiopia. Fairly well written.
It is really a fascinating book written by a well read and informed person. The characters he created are also look real. The things mentioned in the book about Ethiopia as far as I know are well known facts and are not fictitious. But one thing that is strange to me is how Yohannes has lived in a hospital for about two years. I don't think hospitals in Ethiopia had the tolerance to do so. I never heard of any. To make the story short except such made up things I liked the book.
