I'd like to give this 3-1/2 stars. I enjoyed the chatty dialog and friendly ribbing among the police detectives. I was very happy that a contemporary detective story could be constructed without a lot of gratuitous, horrible, gory detail--only enough nastily aggressive and distasteful anti-social behaviors to make the crimes truly repugnant. If I read this correctly, the two main story threads are supposed to meet over the idea of child abuse. However, the story enfolds in too detailed, disorganized--one could say "jumbled" a way, and no such point is clearly made. The characters, while given a few superficially distinctive traits, are otherwise pretty thin. There are some very unlikely occurrences, such as Detective Winter not observing the stutterer as the man they are looking for. The final outcome also seems weak and not really tied to either character or theme. In other words, complication substitutes for characterization. I wish the author had re-written this rather intriguing story over again with more depth and polish.

Frozen Tracks An Inspector Erik Winter Novel Ake Edwardson 9780670063239 Books Reviews

I love stories where I can follow the character's life from book to book. It is interesting to follow and see the development over a span of time and multiple books. I very much enjoy police mysteries. Most of my favorite authors write just these kinds of books. Now with that said, I was a bit disappointed with this book. I think perhaps some of the awkwardness in the plot may have been in the interpretation into English, or maybe I just was not able to really identify with the places and people. For whatever reason, the book just never really worked for me. This was the first of the "series" I read, and I might give another one of the Winter novels a try, but only if I find it on a library cart or at a yard sale...
Another great Ake Edwardson book with Chief Inspector Erik Winter!
Edwardson's books always leave me heavily in the midst of his city, people and even weather. I look forward to traveling to be with him and in the story when ever I have time to read. Edwardson is one of the most unusual writers when it comes to dialogue and I think I like that. You cannot pick up a bad book from this author. Get some of them and read them and then don't share them with your friends, because they might not bring them back.

I was conflicted about a 4 or 5 star rating, but I felt that the reader knew too soon who the villain in the book was,and the only mystery was the unbelievably complex relationships between the assaulted and the assaulter. That just seemed to be too complex to tie into the main framework of the story.
I don't know what it is about reviewing a book that makes one want to nitpick. I love the way Scandinavian writers interweave weather and locale into their stories. And, there is a sense of Paradise Lost in their books that we Americans find creeping into our culture.
Think of this novel as a beautiful cozy evening, you are curled up in your favorite chair with a book and a cup of tea, everything is very peaceful and you can totally relax. That is how this amazing police procedural reads real people doing real work, they are good at what they do, and no matter what the crime or its motive, they leave no stone unturned to find out the truth. In this book, it's not just about whodunit - the process of learning through the work of the detectives is incredibly engaging. A treat!
This easy reading mystery will quickly capture you. The back and forth banter between members of the police department seem realistic and easy to follow. Events appear to be unrelated, but the final chapters bring everything together. There is one bit of a puzzle why would a normal 4 year old child be wheeled around in a buggy? 4 year old children typically run their keepers ragged!

A great read - ENJOY!
I started reading Swedish Mysteries after stumbling on to the Stieg Larsson Millenium Trilogy and bemused by the atmospherics but mainly I became what can only be called a "fan" of Lisbeth Solander, this is not a label anyone would attach me in a single other context.

It seems that Swedes like coffee or is it that Swedish writers drink a lot of it in the gloom of winter (maybe its that I love coffee I roast my own and own a fairly good espresso machine and grinder and other brewers of all sorts of specifications)

Ake Edwardson was mentioned in that book (as well as a couple of other authors Mikael Blomkvist read) and then I happened on this book on .

I read it bit by bit for just over a week and found it more to my taste than Lee Child or some of the other Yankee writers but it is not fast paced nor full of action -- but I think that may be the difference between a police procedural and other categories. I liked it. I recommended it to a friend and I just downloaded Death Angels (reputed to be the first Erik Winter Mystery) to my .

I am a cheapskate.
