I really liked this book. I love Southern settings and this did not disappoint. It is written from the perspective of a child. The book takes place in the early 1060's in Mississippi. It is about the bond between the child, Starla, and a colored woman, Eula and how they grow to love each other. Both are made aware of the difficulties of being white in a black world and being black in a white world. Starla was hated because she is white and of course, we know what Eula had to go through in the 1960's South. I would have given it a 5 star rating except that the perceptions and ability to think at such a deep level would be very difficult for any 10 year old. On one hand, Starla is very naive about so many things yet at times she has the ability to think as deeply as a trained philosopher. I would very much recommend this book.

Outstanding story! I can understand the other references to it being along the lines of "To Kill A Mockingbird". This was the best book I've read this year. I raced back to to find more by this author....I DO wish she would write more of this type of story. Very engaging and vivid. I liked the author's portrayal of the era and the quality of the main character...I caught myself several times, envisioning Scout from the TKAM movie, and then had to readjust to a feisty redhead. I highly recommend this book of you like a narrative about the 60's segregation and the coming of age of a young white girl.
Well written and engaging book about how the events of the early sixties shadowed the lives of small town people in the South through the eyes of a nine, going on ten year old. If you grew up in the era you will be able to relate to some of the events no matter where you grew up. If you didn't live through that time, you will be able to appreciate how far we have come in civil and human rights. It is a great reason to be viligent about back sliding into negative race relations with the current swing of the pendulum towards unrest and hatred.
Whistling Past the Graveyard was a great discussion book for our April meeting. The relstionship of Eula and Starla was interesting yet loving. While reading the book there were times when I was on the edge of my seat and then times when I talked out loud wondering why was Starla doing what she was doing. Starla was a 9'year old like none other;however, our discussion revealed it she really was as normal (sadly to say) as some kids are today.
I have to say I loved the book more after our discussion and would recommend it as a good read.
This story was exciting from almost the beginning to the end. I chose 4 stars because it kept me interested as to what was going to happen to Starla , a young girl who has run away from home with her stern mean grandmother on a 600 mile trip to Nashville where her famous mother lives. She's befriended by a black woman in a rickety old truck where Starla begins spinning her made-up stories to keep from being sent back to her grandmother's. Eula, her new friend believes her story and agrees to take her on to her house. To complicate matters Eula has a brand new white baby in the floor of the truck which she has rescued from the church doorstep. On top of that the time period this takes place in the deep south is in the early 60's when integration was a hotbed. It wasn't safe for blacks and whites to mix.
Starla has some close calls as she, Eula and Baby James travel across the south and Starla learns lessons of a lifetime.
This book is frankly so beautifully conceived and skillfully written. I am so very pleased to have found it. It explores many aspects of love, faith, resilience, and bravery. The title is quite apt. The fiesty Starla and embattled Eula will stay with me for quite a time, as they are so fully rendered that they practically leap from the page.
This story (no spoilers, ever) is full of adventure, danger, self-exploration, life lessons and woven throughout with love. I cannot imagine anyone NOT liking this candid, unique novel. It is a work any author would be proud to have written and a book lover pleased to have read, IMHO. Please do yourself a favor and read this profoundly beautiful novel. I came away with some real thoughts on my own life due to the life lessons that are written in this. I happily recommend this engrossing and well-told tale.
As always I wish Happy Reads to All from the Book Junkie ;)
Whistling Past The Graveyard was selected by my friend, Val for our April book club meeting in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL.
This book highlighted the horrors of the Civil Rights Movement as well as the lessons learned by an Anglo child who was raised (as most were) in a bubble about segregation, believing that African-Americans liked it that way.
When 9 year old Starla takes it upon herself to run away to Nashville to live with her (idea) of a perfect mother; the book takes us on a journey. A journey that explores the levels and tiers of the social-economic conditions of all races during this period as well as the violence that ensued. We meet a motley crew of characters from an abusive husband to a compassionate pastor and so many others in between. Of course the story would not be complete without the local "rednecks" causing all kinds of mayhem.
This is a story with grit and heart and one you will not want to miss. If you like "Saving Cee Cee Honeycutt" and "Dollybaby" you will fall in love with "Whistling Past The Graveyard" Thank you, Val for selecting!!.
